Marketing workshop

Last week at college, my lecturing group had to talk to the people at the marketing department, they were the people who created the prospectus for orpington college. We then had to write down notes for research, these are the notes i took down.

What reading age group should i use when writing in my magazine?

The people in the marketing workshop told me to use a reading age of 10-13. This way people wouldn't find it complicated to read.

What colours should i use?

The people from the marketing department told me I should use bright colours that would stand out so they look appealing to the target audience.

What pictures and text should i use and what ones shouldn’t i use?

I was told that I should use pictures of people from different ethnic groups to show that the magazine doesnt tolerate discrimination. I was also told to use different contrasting colours in different paragraphs so that the magazine looks.

Where should you place your text?

I was told that I should never put my text across a picture as it looks unorganized. I was shown examples of where the text was placed in the prospectus and i liked the way it was displayed on the prospectus, they had transparent colour in like a circle with text on top of it so that u can read it without the picture getting in the way.

Semiology/Semiotics - Signs

  • Iconic - look like what they represent e.g. photo of you.
  • Symbolic/arbitrary - Meaning must be culturally learned. Don't look like what they represent e.g. No entry sign.
  • Indexical - have a connection to what they represent and are suggestive rather than directly resembling e.g. No smoking sign.
